I wrote these lyrics specifically for a city. Newberg, NY. That's where TRUCE did a 3 week outreach. But before we went out there, Dave Ham took me to scout it out first..to see what we were dealing with. For a small town, man, it was grizzly. It was just like a centralized focused concentration of poverty, anger, desperation. It was serious. And I wrote these lyrics for them.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get the rights to the beat so I had to use this one. The first beat I put it on was sooooo much better than this one.
True story though: I remember one day that we were outside, I miscued cuz the sound man didn't put the volume on until like the 4th bar, so I started over and miscued again. Now I know I look white, and this black girl off to the side started laughing at me. But I'm like, whatever, I gotta do what I gotta do. So I start spitting and she gets mad serious by the end of the first verse. Then I spit my second verse and she's mad teary eyed. By the end of the third verse I look over to her and she's just bawling on her friends shoulder. It was a crazy situation. Man, I got stories for days about Newberg. One of the best experiences of my life.
